In the ever growing discussion on what foods are good or bad for you, Genetically Modified Organisms, also known as GMOs are at the forefront of many American citizens. GMOS are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals. In other words, they have been altered in some way or another and not necessarily in a good way. Recently, I came across an article that made me feel very uneasy. Studies involving GMOs have shown organ damage, gastrointestinal and immune system disorders, accelerated aging, infertility and even death among its tests subjects. The studies provide crucial insight on how GMOs can have a potential negative effect on our lives. It is very important for us to understand how the majority of the foods we eat are processed and what can be found in them. Properly labeling foods gives us a sense of ownership as you are able to decide on what foods you and your loved ones would like to consume. Many of the foods we consume today are not properly labeled and about 80% of them contain GMOs.
More attention and awareness needs to be brought forth about the dangers and numerous health problems that GMOs have on us and the environment today. Issues like these make for great discussion because it encompasses what it means to have liberty and freedom of speech in the United States. We have every right to know what is in our foods and properly labeling them would be most helpful in determining what foods are good or bad for us to eat.
