Amy Winehouse may have been dead for up to six hours before a security guard found her body in bed at around 4 p.m. London time on Saturday. 

The five-time Grammy winner last spoke to her security team at 10 a.m. Saturday, telling them she was going to sleep. Rigor mortis had set in by the time she was found, suggesting she had been dead for several hours. 

Sources tell Britain’sSun newspaper that Winehouse, 27, had seen a doctor Friday night as part of a routine series of regular checkups, given her battle with addiction. The doctor saw nothing amiss.

Amy Jade Winehouse, born September 14, 1983, exploded onto the U.K. scene in 2003 with her debut album, Frank, which was nominated for the Mercury Prize, the award given to the year’s best British or Irish album. After a string of well-received festival gigs and an Ivor Novello songwriting award, she began work on the album that would make her an international star: Back to Black, released Stateside in 2007.

In the hours following her death, Winehouse’s American record label, Universal Republic, said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of such a gifted musician, artist and performer. Our prayers go out to Amy’s family, friends and fans at this difficult time.”

MEXICO CITY — A 14-year-old U.S. citizen charged in Mexico as having worked as a drug cartel hitman was found guilty of homicide on Tuesday and sentenced to three years in prison, the maximum for minors.

Edgar Jimenez Lugo, who was born in San Diego, allegedly worked for the Beltran Leyva brothers’ drug cartel in Morelos state, outside Mexico City.

The attorney general’s office in Morelos said a local juvenile court had convicted him of various crimes — including killing four people whose mutilated bodies were found hanging from a bridge not far from Mexico City last August.

The boy was caught last December as he boarded a plane in the city of Cuernavaca. He was traveling to the border city of Tijuana with two of his sisters, one of whom is believed to be the lover of one of the cartel’s bosses, the Mexican army said at the time.

Jimenez first made headlines last November as reports of his grisly murders, including beheadings, surfaced.

Once arrested, he acknowledged having killed at least seven people under the influence of drugs provided by a cartel leader, according to the army statement.

He was eventually charged in four murders and three kidnappings.

BAGHDAD – A suicide bomber sat for hours Tuesday among hundreds of unprotected army recruits before detonating nail-packed explosives strapped to his body, killing 61 people and casting new doubt on the ability of Iraqi forces as U.S. troops head home.

Bodies of bloodied young men, some still clutching job applications in their hands, were scattered on the ground outside the military headquarters in central Baghdad. Some of the estimated 1,000 men who had gathered there before dawn for a good spot in line were so desperate for work they returned hours after being treated at hospitals for injuries in the attack.

Though Iraq’s military and police recruiting centers have been attacked repeatedly, there was virtually no security provided for the hundreds of men seeking to hand in applications on the last day of a nine-day recruitment drive at the headquarters for the Iraqi army’s 11th Division.

The bomber, it appears, simply walked up and joined the applicants. Witnesses said he approached an officer collecting I.D. cards and set off a blast that split his own body in two.

“Severed hands and legs were falling over me. I was soaked with blood from the body parts and wounded and dead people falling over and beside me,” said Yasir Ali, who had been waiting outside the military headquarters since 4 a.m.

After washing the blood off himself, Ali was among those who came back to try to retrieve applications and other documents left in the panic and see if they could still apply. (continue)..

The Eastern Conference champions signed 7-foot-1, 325-pound Shaquille O’neal on Wednesday, adding the 15-time All-Star to a team needing his size with center Kendrick Perkins recovering from knee surgery that could sideline him until February.

The deal with the free agent center is for two years and about $3 million, a person with knowledge of the negotiations said on condition of anonymity because no details were released.
